Do you mean, if you don’t use the Blender installer but instead use the Blender zip file, can you use the automatic updating feature in Sensei Format? Yes, you should be able to, once Sensei Format is installed any version of Blender you run with the same version number such as 2.77 should use the same roaming settings set in place by Sensei Format, whether or not the version of Blender came from a zip file or installer.

Just leave File > Sensei Format > “Check For Updates” checkmarked and checks will be made once a day for Blender and Sensei Format updates. I just recorded a video today regarding updating Sensei Format and Blender manually and automatically. It will be posted this Friday on my youtube channel youtube.com/blenderforums it explains this stuff a lot more in depth.

Are you currently using a version of Blender lower than 2.77? Or a version of Sensei Format lower than 5.27? If so, are you not getting a message once a day pop up in your header menu to the right with a monkey icon and a message informing you of available updates?

If you are, then when they pop up go to File > Sensei Format > and update them, read the instructions and follow them. If you are using outdated versions of Blender or Sensei Format and not seeing these update messages, you can cause Sensei Format to reset its once daily check, by going to File > Sensei Format and unchecking “Check For Updates”, then restarting Blender. If you’re using a version of Blender older than 2.77 or a version of Sensei Format older than 5.27 you should get a message informing you of this.
