Sensei, I’ve carefully followed instructions for the video Instant Normal Mapping In Zero Brush 1.5

At about 1 million faces, the plane takes the texture image well, and produces a great bump. I hit the As Image button and wait. I reduce the number of levels pressing less, less, less back down to 64 faces. Instead of the texture remaining, I get almost a completely flat plane again.

      Any advice? Thanks. Mick

So it is working, just not when you do it with a really high amount of faces? Or it’s just not working at all?

Recreate the problem, then right when you’ve lowered it down to 64 faces (or whatever) and it doesn’t seem to be working, take a screenshot of the entire screen. Next go to “Window” and press “Toggle System Console” and take another screenshot. Post them here or send them to blenderforums at gmail. I tested it over here and it’s working fine even at a million and a half faces so not sure what the issue is on your computer. The screenshots will help me figure that out.

Ok. The problem is, you are in Cycles mode. Cycles mode will not display bump or normal maps in the 3D View only when you render or do a render preview. To see the normal map after you’ve created it in Cycles either press the render preview button in the Zero Brush menu while in texture paint mode or down in the bottom right camera view area, or just hit the render button and you’ll also see it. If you switch from Cycles to Blender Render, you can see what the map you made looks like in the 3D View or at render time. So nothing’s wrong, the map, material and everything are in place, you just can’t see the effects of the normal map when in Cycles unless you render or do a render preview.

I tried again and failed again. I tried another computer, and all worked well as per your instructions. Time to upgrade my nine year old computer. :)

This is an extremely useful function of Zero Brush. I’m very happy with it.
