      Hi there,

First of all let me say I absolutely love what you are doing and really enjoying playing with zero brush 1.5 but I have a few issues (could be something simple cos im a bit of a novice).

      – Firstly, when trying to add a colour preset for a new palette I get a “failed to create presets path” error and also have a *missing paths* icon when I press presets.

      – If I try to save my layers to my specified file path on hard disk it wont save all layers (only one) or wont use my created layer names (reverts back to the model default), and it loses all bar one of my layers in the zero brush properties window i.e. they are there, but when I click on them the material/texture layer with all the work I put into it has vanished and I have to start again on that layer. I can do the work around no worries via the uv/image editor method, but when I do and then re- open my externally edited map into the uv/image editor, I cant see it on the model in any view or render??
Sometimes I can see it in textured view if I manually change the image texture in the node window, but then when I go to rendered view, the render is either all black, or reverts to the default grey even if I hit render. Then when I close rendered view, I lose the texture completely from textured view as well (it goes black)???

      – I don’t have an option to merge layers at all. Its not in the drop down tab or when I press Q?

Hope this all makes sense? I really hope its something I am doing and an easy fix.

      Keep up the awesome work!

      Thanks Hayzy. A few questions:

      • What operating system are you on?

      • Are you using Sensei Format or just the Zero Brush 1.5 addon alone?

      • If using Sensei Format and on Windows, did you install via the .zip or installer?

      • Are you using the latest version of Blender 2.73a ? (If not, highly recomend going and getting it blender.org/download)

Also, make sure you’re always using the Material viewport shading and not the texture viewport shading (this won’t solve any of your problems, just a much better way to view your object, although Zero Brush will tyipcally set you to material viewport shading by default).

There are some issues with Cycles layers regarding the names of the images, but not the names of the textures/layers (this is mentioned in the known issues area of the Zero Brush 1.5 release page here on the site). Basically you can rename textures (paint layers) anything you want, but the actual image names need to at least have “color” in its name if it is a color layer “bump” if it is a bump layer and so on. I wouldn’t change the image names directly unless absolutely necessary until you are finished with your project. You can of course name the textures anything to help label your project and it work fine. But I’m not even sure if this is your issue here. Sounds like some other weird stuff is going on with your file. Not sure if you’re on Windows or not but I’ve heard weird things can happen on some machines if Blender isn’t being run as an administrator. You may investigate right clicking on Blender and under Security, checking advance and change as many settings for ownership and control in your favor as possible. So, far you’re the first with these particular issues. Hope we can get them worked out. Thanks again.

      Hey mate,

      – Im on windows 8.1

      – Not using Sensei format (at the moment)

      – I installed via the zip

      – Just updated Blender version to 2.73a

OK, so I just tested what you said in your reply. Currently running as an administrator, I’m using the material viewport shader.

      Heres what is now happening:

      – In cycles mode, I still cant merge my layers because my layers have no eye icon on their layers tabs (is says “this option is not available”) is this only available in Blender Render?

      – When I change to Blender Render and try to do a render preview with Ctrl B, all I get is a full black square?
(this isn’t so much of an issue as I prefer cycles anyway)

      – I am no longer having an issue with losing my layers after saving in cycles which is fantastic, but occasionally lose them when switching from cycles to Internal then back again. Is there currently any way of creating a new layer from my texture map that I re open into Blender (after I have externally merged my layers in photoshop for example)??

      – I am still having a Palette saving issue, still cant save a new preset – “failed to create presets path”? And get a *missing path* in the drop down?

      Thanks for your help!

(again not such a big deal but would be nice to get working) This happens in both cycles and Internal

Try using the regular brush menu in the tools tab. See if you can even create a palette the regular Blender way, if you can’t then it’s probably not an issue with Zero Brush but something else.

You can’t disable visibility of layers during Cycles mode. Come to think of it, maybe would have been a better idea if I left all of those icons with an open eye rather than blank to express this point. The “New Merged Layer” button only works for color diffuse maps which in ZB are Color layers but also glow layers. The main point of this was to be able to create multiple color layers (usually texture painted which you can see and edit while in Blender internal) and then be able to merge them into one layer for game assets or to be able to see in Cycles, as Cycles can only display one color layer at a time.

If you’re switching back and forth between Cycles, make sure you’re always using ZB’s Cycles switching buttons either in the top menu in texture paint mode or by pressing Q/Use Cycles or if you can’t use Q by pressing the little blank space between the fullscreen button and the particle brush button if you need to switch back and forth but are in a mode other than texture paint.

If you’re having trouble with layers disappearing when you switch back and forth between Cycles, press save my layers to do a save over all images or just press the zb object mode button at the top to hop into object mode (which if autosave is left on and it is by default) will save only that current object’s layers. The whole thing about saving layers, is that Blender likes to abruptly delete these images if you don’t occasionally save them in one way or another. This happens ZB or no. However you may have some other weird file stuff going on with your system, not sure.

Instead of creating a new merged layer in Cycles, you may wish to just press “Bake Materials” which will create a baked layer, thus effectively merging all of your visible Cycles layers. Do this while in Cycles of course for Cycles baking to be used. Be aware that baking, especially in Cycles, can take a very long time so you may wish to lower your bake quality in the ZB menu as well as New Layer Size, just to test and see if that’s what you’re looking for, then do a better quality one later.

If you first select the little folder icon to turn on hard drive saving then select a folder location, then press Save My Layers. You can then open them all up in Photoshop, merge them then save them as the exact name of one of the layers you don’t mind being the new merged layer. Then save that file (make sure you keep the filename the same as whatever layer you want to be replaced or else ZB won’t be able to reload them). Back in Blender, hit the “Reload” button in the ZB layer menu. Not sure what to tell you if you’re still unable to use the “Save To Hard Drive” feature and have it work though.
